ITP Internships & CPT

Step #1 - Get Enrolled in an ITP Internship Class for Academic Credit

ITP staff maintain ITP Opportunities, a public site and email list announcing jobs and internships that may be of interest to the ITP community.

Students seeking to enroll in an Internship course for credit need to:

(1) receive informal approval from your academic adviser to take the internship course
(2) complete the ITP Internship Form (click here) (you must be logged into your NYU Home account)
(3) after submitting the form, Dante will be notified and will enroll you in the Internship course (ITPG-GT 2100) and send you a confirmation of your enrollment

Internship (ITPG-GT 2100) is a full-term, 14-week class. For Fall 2019, the start and end dates of the class are 09/03/2019 - 12/13/2019.

Internship courses have a variable unit load, and students may register for anywhere from a 1.0 unit internship course to a 6.0 unit internship course, provided they meet the required minimum number of hours - please see our guidelines below.*

Internship credit/hours requirements are as follows:

For 1.0 unit, an average of 3 hours per week over the 14 week semester or a total of 42 hours.
For 2.0 units, an average of 6 hours per week over the 14 week semester or a total of 84 hours.
For 3.0 units, an average of 9 hours per week over the 14 week semester or a total of 126 hours.
For 4.0 units, an average of 12 hours per week over the 14 week semester or a total of 168 hours.
For 5.0 units, an average of 15 hours per week over the 14 week semester or a total of 210 hours.
For 6.0 units, an average of 18 hours per week over the 14 week semester or a total of 252 hours.

*You may apply for fewer credits than required working hours, however, you may not apply for more.

We strongly recommend taking no more than 8.0 units of Internship courses during the two years at ITP, unless there is a compelling reason to exceed this guideline.

Step #2 - Apply for CPT - Curricular Practical Training
(**for International Students on F-1 Visas, doing PAID or UNPAID Internships**)

CPT allows you, as an F-1 student, to accept off-campus employment as part of the curriculum of your degree program. You must meet the following eligibility guidelines:
  1. You must have a job offer directly related to your program of study.
  2. You must have been a full-time student in the US for at least one academic year.
  3. You must be in valid F-1 status.
  4. You must be in good academic standing.
If you work over 12 months of full-time CPT, you will forfeit all OPT.

**Please note that CPT start and end dates must fall within course dates unless there is an academic reason not to do so.**

**CPT dates may not extend into an adjoining semester unless there is appropriate additional internship course enrollment for that semester.**

To begin the process, submit the online request (click here) to OGS for an I-20 authorizing you for CPT.

On the online CPT request form, you will need to:
  1. List Dante DelGiacco (, ITP Department Administrator, as your departmental contact / academic adviser for the purposes of the CPT authorization.
  2. Provide the name, address, and dates of employment for your proposed CPT employer.
  3. Upload a scanned copy of your I-94 record.
Once OGS receives both your request for a CPT and the electronic confirmation from your department, it takes up to 5 business days to process your request. OGS will send an email to your NYU email address when your new I-20 is ready.
Once you receive your authorization for CPT, you must apply for a Social Security Number if you don't already have one. You must have a Social Security Number before you can be paid.

If you have any questions or issues regarding the CPT request process, please contact the Office of Global Services (OGS).

OGS is located at 383 Lafayette Street, New York, NY 10003. Their phone number is (212) 998-4720.
